The discussion around having the ideal skin shade to match up beauty products and makeup is pretty open-ended and relative because we have so many skin types and what works for them respectively. So, what is ideal for one person might be different for the next person.
In this article, we want to examine various skin tones and things you need to consider when selecting a makeup product.
In the context of beauty discussions, skin types have always been segmented under categories like normal, sensitive skin, oily, dry, sweaty, and a combination of two. Regardless of what product you use or your complexion, you fall under one of these categories.
So, which one are you?
Also, it is important to take note that these reactions change with time or the season.
Let’s take a look at the skin types:
NORMAL SKIN
A normal skin type is just what it sounds like. It’s not on a defining extreme like the others. It is not too oily, dry or sensitive. Normal skin is not overly sensitive to changed conditions, weather, or allergies.
SENSITIVE SKIN
Sensitive skin is what I like to call the vocal one. Whatever change or discomfort you are experiencing at a given moment, your skin reacts either in itches, rashes, discoloration and so many other symptoms of a very sensitive skin
THE OILY
The oily skin type is pretty shiny, darker complexion, and has large pores, and comes with some blemishes. Oily skin can be sweaty and damp most of the time.
DRY
This is a pretty difficult one to maintain as it’s very dry, dull, and rough; it cracks, itches, and creates white dry layers on top which can be very embarrassing, especially during the harmattan period.
COMBINED
People who have a combination of all these skin types, get to experience the feeling of each of them according to the season, age, or environment, people with these skin types have larger pores and they can be oily or dry in different situations.
SKIN TONE
Basically, skin tone is the amount of melanin you are genetically and naturally blessed with on the outer layer of your skin. The amount of melanin in our skins ranges from one person to another despite being of the same racial identity or origin. The production of melanin in the skin reacting to ultraviolet rays of sunlight varies and so do skin tones.
These slight differences are why there are many skin tones and makeup or foundation shades in the beauty world of cosmetics.
How to Determine Your Skin Tone
Making the decision to approach beauty products and cosmetics is always expected to come after you have determined your skin tone, and we will show a couple of ways to find and determine your skin tone in order to have makeup that matches.
EXAMINE YOUR FACE IN NATURAL LIGHT
Whenever you are applying your makeup in a brightly lit environment and you notice a gray tone and your foundation doesn’t compliment your undertones, thoroughly wash the makeup off your face. Get a naturally lit environment after at least 10 minutes and observe your skin, jawline and natural tone.
OBSERVE YOUR VEINS
For many of us who have pronounced veins, they are quite observable and you look out for:
- Greenish blue veins mean you have a warm skin tone.
- Purple or blue-looking veins mean you have a cool skin tone.
- For people who are unable to tell the color of their veins, it means you most likely have a neutral skin tone.
After going through the process of tone research and definition, you can now go-ahead to look for the right cosmetics and makeup products that align and fit perfectly to your skin type and tone.
If you can match up the skin tone that goes with a palette color and shade, your problems with having corresponding makeup with your skin will be over.
· Cool Skin Tones
Going by the skin tone distinction above, if you determine your skin tone to be cool, you can have blue-based eye shadows, and pigment enhancement can be achieved with blush and also, red, pink, or purple shades on the lips.
· Warm Skin Tones
People with warm skin tones fall under the browny golden shades category and are advised to use earthy eye shadows to complement the glow. Use dark shades of lipstick, especially red, and use illuminating powder.
· Neutral Skin Tones
The term neutral suggests that almost anything can work and you are lucky, I guess. Just learn how to match the makeup with your hair and accessories and you are good to go.
FEW TIPS TO MATCH YOUR MAKEUP TO YOUR SKIN TONE AS SEASONS CHANGE
1. Attach a brand to your skin type
2. Test different shades and products of foundation to see what fits
3. Use translucent powder
